Veterans Day flags fly across Colorado every November 11. They are a steady, heartfelt way to honor the men and women who served our country. At Flag World Company, we have helped Front Range families, schools, and veterans’ groups mark the day since 1989. Our showroom sits at 1270 South Abilene St, Aurora, CO 80012. Veterans Day is one of the most meaningful days on the flag calendar. Maybe you are raising the Stars and Stripes at home. Maybe you are outfitting a ceremony or displaying a service flag for someone you love. Either way, how we fly our flags says something. So this guide covers what the day means, how to display Veterans Day flags correctly, and the military and memorial flags we carry for Colorado’s veteran community.

What Veterans Day Honors, and How It Differs From Memorial Day

Veterans Day honors everyone who served in the United States Armed Forces, living and deceased. That sets it apart from Memorial Day, which remembers those who died in service. So one day thanks everyone who served, while the other remembers the fallen. Both matter, and we should observe both correctly.

The date carries its own history. November 11 began as Armistice Day. It marked the end of fighting in World War I, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. In 1954, Congress renamed it Veterans Day to honor American veterans of all wars. Across the Front Range, that history shows up every year in parades, school assemblies, and flags on front porches.

Flag Etiquette for Veterans Day

Here is the detail most people get wrong, so it is worth stating plainly. On Veterans Day, the American flag flies at full staff all day. It is not a half-staff day. Memorial Day is the opposite: the flag rises to half-staff until noon, then returns to full staff. So fly your Veterans Day flags at full height, from sunrise to sunset. That is the correct and respectful way to mark November 11.

A few more basics from the U.S. Flag Code help you get it right:

  • Timing — display the flag from sunrise to sunset, and light it to fly around the clock.
  • Weather — fly an all-weather flag in rain or snow; otherwise bring it in.
  • Condition — retire and replace a faded or frayed flag; do not fly it.

For the full rundown, see our guides to the U.S. Flag Code and flag etiquette. Getting the details right is its own small act of respect.

Military, Memorial, and Service Flags

Veterans Day is also when many Colorado families fly a flag for a specific person or branch. We carry a deep selection of military memorial flags and service flags for that purpose. Our range covers branch flags for the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and Space Force. We also carry POW/MIA flags that keep faith with those still unaccounted for.

For government buildings, veterans’ halls, and military facilities, our G-Spec flags meet federal specifications. So whether you need a single memorial flag for the porch or a full set for a ceremony, we can help. We either have it in stock or we make it. These Veterans Day flags carry weight on November 11, and we treat them that way.

The Marine Corps Birthday on November 10

The day before Veterans Day belongs to the Marines. The United States Marine Corps dates to November 10, 1775. Marines mark it every year with ceremonies, birthday balls, and flag displays. Colorado has a strong Marine community. So many celebrate the two days together, raising the Corps colors on the 10th and the Stars and Stripes on the 11th.

We stock military and service flags for all the branches. So outfitting a birthday ceremony or a unit event is straightforward. Call 303-623-0589 if you need help pulling the right set together.

Displaying the American Flag at Home and Work

For most people, Veterans Day flags start with the American flag itself. Colorado’s sun, wind, and altitude are hard on flags, so material matters. Our nylon flags are light and fly in a gentle breeze. Our heavy-duty spun polyester holds up to stronger Front Range wind. Every American flag we sell is Made in the USA and holds up for years.

Ready to fly it properly? Browse our American flags, flagpoles, and flagpole accessories. For a residential or commercial pole, our crews handle the work from the foundation up. So see our flagpole installation page for details and an estimate. Free shipping is available on orders over $129.90 (restrictions apply).

Veterans Day Flags for Ceremonies, Schools, and Civic Groups

Beyond the home, Veterans Day flags show up at parades, school assemblies, and community ceremonies across the metro. We produce custom flags and banners in-house for events like these. Our work includes high-detail logo work and durable outdoor materials. So a VFW post, a school, or a civic group can honor the day with a custom piece.

Retiring a Worn Flag With Respect

A flag that has given its service deserves a dignified end. An American flag can become worn, faded, or torn beyond repair. When it does, the U.S. Flag Code calls for a respectful retirement, traditionally by burning. So if you have a flag at the end of its life, you do not have to handle it alone.

We accept worn American flags at our Aurora showroom, and we retire each one properly. See our guide to flag disposal and retirement for how it works. It is a fitting way to close the loop around a flag that has done its duty.
