FLAG SIZE GUIDE

Before you take on the simple yet deeply patriotic responsibility of buying, owning, and caring for the national flag, there are a few things worth knowing. Caring for the national flag is not something to take lightly.

There is actually a flag code that flag owners should follow. It explains proper flag etiquette β€” folding, raising, mounting, illuminating, saluting, displaying, and disposal β€” and it also covers flagpoles, flag sizes, and proportions. Here is a quick guide to standard American flag sizes and proportions before you place an order.

How to choose the right flag size

If you already have a flagpole, start there. Measure the height of your pole. As a general rule, the flag’s length should be about one-third of the pole’s height.

If you don’t have a pole yet, think about the space where the flag will fly. Larger homes and buildings call for a taller pole and a bigger flag. The most popular size is 3′ x 5′ on a 6′ house-mounted pole. For smaller spaces, a 2Β½’ x 4′ flag on a 5′ pole works well. For in-ground poles 20 feet or taller, start at a minimum of 8′ x 12′ on a 40′ pole.
