July 4th Flags in Colorado: How to Display the American Flag on Independence Day
July 4th is the most important day on the American flag calendar. The U.S. Flag Code specifically lists Independence Day as one of the days when the flag should especially be displayed. This year carries extra significance — July 4, 2026 marks America’s 250th birthday, making it the most significant Independence Day in a generation. At Flag World Company in Aurora, Colorado, we’ve been helping Colorado homes, businesses, schools, and civic organizations fly their flags properly since 1989. Use this guide to find out what flags to fly, how to display them correctly, and what to order before July 4th arrives.
The American Flag on July 4th — Full Staff, All Day
One of the most common questions we get around Independence Day is whether the flag should be flown at half staff. The answer is no. July 4th is a day of national celebration — the American flag flies at full staff all day. Half staff is reserved for officially designated days of national mourning, not celebration days. On Independence Day, raise the flag at the top of the pole and keep it there from sunrise to sunset.
Want to fly the flag after dark? The U.S. Flag Code requires proper illumination for overnight display. A solar-powered flagpole light is the easiest solution — no wiring and no installation required. Simply mount it to the pole, and it charges during the day and illuminates the flag through the night. Browse our solar flagpole lights to find the right fit for your pole size.
How to Display the American Flag Correctly on July 4th
Flying the flag on July 4th is a proud tradition. Flying it correctly shows the respect it deserves. Here are the key display rules from the U.S. Flag Code:
- Hoist briskly, lower ceremoniously. Raise the flag quickly at sunrise. At sunset, bring it down slowly and with dignity.
- Union at the peak. The blue field of stars always goes at the top of the staff. This applies unless the flag is being flown at half staff, which does not apply on July 4th.
- The American flag leads. When flying multiple flags, the American flag takes the position of honor — at the top of the pole or on the viewer’s far left on separate poles. No other flag may fly higher or larger than it.
- Sunrise to sunset — or 24 hours with illumination. Display the flag from sunrise to sunset. With proper lighting, you may keep it out all night.
- Replace worn flags before July 4th. A torn, faded, or tattered flag should be retired before Independence Day. Flag World accepts worn flags for respectful retirement at our Aurora showroom — visit us at 1270 South Abilene St, Aurora, CO 80012, or visit our flag retirement ceremony services page.

Flying Multiple Flags on July 4th
Many Colorado homes and businesses fly multiple flags on Independence Day — a state flag, a military branch flag, or a commemorative flag alongside the American flag. A few rules apply when displaying multiple flags together:
- The American flag must always be at the top of the pole or in the position of honor.
- No other flag may be larger than the American flag.
- On a single pole, the American flag flies at the very top. All other flags fly below it.
- On separate poles of equal height, the American flag goes on the far left from the audience’s perspective.

What time should I put out the American flag on July 4th?
Raise the flag briskly at sunrise. Lower it slowly and ceremoniously at sunset. If your flagpole has proper illumination — such as a solar flagpole light — you may display the flag through the night for 24-hour display. Browse our solar flagpole lights if you need to add illumination to your pole.
What size American flag do I need for July 4th?
For a standard residential porch or bracket-mount pole, a 3×5 foot American flag is the most popular choice. For a 20-foot in-ground flagpole, a 3×5 or 4×6 flag is the right fit. The general rule is the flag’s length should be one-quarter to one-third the height of the pole. Browse our American flags for all available sizes and materials.
Can I fly other flags alongside the American flag on July 4th?
Yes. State flags, military branch flags, and commemorative flags may all be flown alongside the American flag.
